Unveiling Cappadocia: Adventures Beyond the Balloons

Let’s set the scene… the year is 2020. (Is it just me, or do those numbers still bring a bit of PTSD?). I’m packed and ready for Turkey! Growing up with travel dreams, I imagined countries like France and Italy—classic, beautifully showcased destinations. But Turkey? That wasn’t on my radar until a friend, years later, encouraged me to consider a visit. So there I was, unexpectedly excited to venture into a country I knew so little about yet felt a deep urge to explore. But then… along comes Covid. Remember that little pandemic? Just days before takeoff, my flight was canceled, and it would be another year before I’d finally make it there. The disappointment was tough (my packed luggage remained by the door for days), but when the time finally came to takeoff, it was more than worth the wait. Sometimes, the best experiences come after a little patience.

So there I was, finally in this beautiful destination brimming with history, rich beauty, vibrant culture, and incredible cuisine! Every aspect of the country captivated me, whisking me away on what felt like a magic carpet ride (see what I didn’t there lol). My first stop was Istanbul, a city alive with colors, sounds, and stories of the past. While some areas limited traffic due to the ongoing pandemic, I still managed to soak in unforgettable experiences: visiting the iconic Hagia Sophia, cruising along the Bosphorus, exploring the grandeur of Topkapi Palace, and wandering through the bustling Grand Bazaar. Each moment felt like stepping into a new chapter of history.

While Istanbul was unforgettable, the true star of my trip was Cappadocia! Side note: I’d been pronouncing it wrong until I got there! I visited in September, which, according to many seasoned travelers, falls within the ideal window of April to October. If you’re planning a trip, I highly recommend visiting during these months to fully immerse yourself in all that Cappadocia has to offer—especially the iconic hot air balloon ride!

Cappadocia is a relatively small town that can be explored in just a couple of days, however, try to plan for more than that, as the balloon climate can be unpredictable. We stayed for three days and two nights, and when that almost wasn’t enough. Our initial attempt was derailed by aggressive winds— we made it all the way to the balloon grounds at 6 AM, only to be turned back around. Our final shot came just minutes before we had to leave for the airport, and we took it with no regrets! Somehow, we even made our flight. Moral of the story: the more time you can spare in Cappadocia, the better. And don’t worry—there’s plenty to do and see on the ground while you wait for your perfect moment in the sky!

Here’s a list of breathtaking adventures that made my journey to Cappadocia truly magical:
