Positano for Less: Scenic Day Trip via Vico Equense

Where there’s a will, there’s always an affordable way! If you recall, during my first trip to Italy, I missed out on the Amalfi Coast. After getting swept up in Rome’s charm, I had little time left to uncover the coast. Through research and chatting with locals, I quickly learned that exploring the Amalfi Coast takes some pre-planning—and quite a bit of cash. As a popular tourist destination, it can get pricey fast.

For those who don’t know me, I’m a “ballin on a budget” kinda gal. I try to get the most out of every experience while still having enough funds for my next getaway (which I’m usually planning while waiting at the airport to head home!). The Amalfi Coast, and Positano in particular, isn’t a skip away from Rome. While there are plenty of ways to get there, I went with an option that was budget-friendly and allowed me to explore on my own terms and schedule.

This route requires a bit of boldness and a taste for adventure—which, in my opinion, only adds to the fun and makes the experience more memorable. So here’s how you can do it too, in just four easy steps…

Step 1: Rent a Car in Rome
Now, I’m from Dallas, Texas—the defensive driving capital of the world—but Dallas drivers have nothing on those in Italy! I’m not sure which Walmart these drivers got their licenses from, but just know, they drive wild. By renting a car, you’re fully immersing yourself in the local experience, so don’t be afraid to adapt to their flow. You’ll need to channel a bit of that bold, Italian driving spirit—just remember to stay safe! Renting a car not only gives you the freedom to explore on your own schedule, but it also lets you soak in the real Italy along the way.

Step 2: Head to Vico Equense
Vico Equense is a charming little town just outside Sorrento that we stumbled upon by accident. Originally, we planned to drive straight into Sorrento and stay there (which you can still do), but many of our lodging searches pointed us to Vico Equense. It ended up being a hidden gem that we fell in love with!

Accommodations in Vico Equense—and even Sorrento—are often more affordable compared to Positano, but that doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on beauty. We stayed at the stunning Hotel Mary, and it did not disappoint. The views were incredible, and the customer service, landscaping, and overall aesthetic made it a perfect retreat. If you’re looking for affordability without sacrificing the charm, Vico Equense is a fantastic option!

Step 3: Take a Train from Vico Equense to Sorrento
If you choose to stay in Sorrento, you can skip this step and move on to step 4. But if you’re in Vico Equense, the train station is just a short walk away. You can easily buy a ticket to Sorrento at the station’s ticket booth, and the attendants are incredibly kind and helpful when it comes to pointing you in the right direction. It’s a quick and simple way to make your way to the heart of Sorrento!

Step 4: Hop on the Bus to the Amalfi Coast
Here’s where things get a little hectic! Plenty of people have the same bright idea to take this route to the coast, so expect long lines for the bus—but if you know that going in, you’ll be just fine. First, grab a bus ticket to Positano at the ticket counter inside the station. The attendants will point you to the bus stop, which is right outside the station in the parking lot. Buses arrive every 20 minutes, but remember—lines can get long, and the buses can be crowded, with some people standing.

Here’s a pro tip: If you’re near the front of the line but the bus is too packed for comfort, it’s worth waiting for the next one. You’ll want to be relaxed and comfortable so you can fully enjoy the stunning views ahead. Once you finally get on, grab a seat on the left-hand side (which will give you the best view to the right as the bus moves forward). The views from this side are unbelievable! As you ride along the Amalfi Coast, take a moment to soak it all in—remind yourself why you’re here, and feel the gratitude for this dream-turned-reality.

Once you reach Positano, your only task is to enjoy the moment. Get lost in the charm of this town—stroll through its winding streets, savor a delicious meal, snap some beautiful photos, and relax by the water. Remember, this is the moment you’ve always dreamed of!

When it’s time to head back, just reverse the steps to return to your hotel. And don’t forget—grab a seat on the right-hand side of the bus this time (left side when facing forward) for one final breathtaking view of Positano.

Alright guys, that’s it, that’s all!!! I’m already looking forward to our next Runway.. Until then, keep strutting through life, one adventure at a time!
